Over Three Weeks to Go: Beekbergen Prepares for the World Pair Driving Championship – A Personal Milestone for Mieke van Tergouw
In just over three weeks, the grounds of Riant Equestrian Centre in Beekbergen will host the World Pair Driving Championship. For Mieke van Tergouw, former world champion and this year’s Event Director, organizing this championship on her home turf is more than just a sporting highlight – it’s a deeply personal milestone.
“I always said I would only organize the World Championships once I was no longer competing myself. Now the time has come, and it feels like the icing on the cake – especially as a tribute to my father, who laid the foundation here.”
The Van Tergouw name has been linked to driving sport for decades. At her Riant Equestrian Centre, Mieke has trained countless drivers and horses and helped establish numerous events. But organizing a World Championship is a different level. “You think it’s similar to an international competition – which we’ve hosted before – but a World Championship is truly a different league. Everything has to be perfect, from the obstacles and the footing to the entertainment program.”
Horse First – Always
Van Tergouw’s vision for the sport is clear: top-level sport must go hand in hand with equine welfare. The course can be challenging, but never at the expense of the horse.
“I always say: your horse should be your partner, not an animal that obeys out of fear. There must be mutual respect. I have a bond with my horses – we understand each other without words. And when you have that connection, this is the most beautiful sport there is.”
Her dedication is reflected in the brand-new Agterberg competition footing. This permanent all-weather surface ensures optimal and fair conditions – even in heavy rain – for all competitors.
“Thanks to support from the Municipality of Apeldoorn, Geldersch Landschap and the Province of Gelderland, we’ve been able to invest in a professional surface by Agterberg, which guarantees consistency, cushioning, and drainage in all weather. It’s a huge gift to the sport.”
Spectacular Opening & Festival Atmosphere
But in August, it’s about more than just sport. Van Tergouw wants this World Championship to be more than an equestrian event – she wants it to be a celebration for everyone.
“My father was knighted partly because our events have always been freely accessible to the public. We’re keeping that tradition. Parking comes at a small fee, but everyone should be able to enjoy this beautiful sport.”
Beyond the thrilling competition, the grounds will be transformed into a lively festival. Expect a foal auction, live music, a foam party, shows, a kids’ program, and an opening ceremony like no other.
“The Grande Opening on Wednesday evening is unmissable. Two hours of spectacle with the presentation of the driving teams, a performance by the Royal Stables, a cavalry show, music, shows highlighting Dutch horses, and an epic race between IJsbrand Chardon’s four-in-hand and Tom Coronel’s racing car. We’ll then party into the night with Crazy Pianos live on stage.”
With plenty of family activities on-site, the event is perfect for families and holidaymakers visiting the Veluwe region.
Team Spirit Is the Key to Success
For Van Tergouw, a strong team is just as crucial as a strong driving pair.
“A successful pair only works when the horses complement each other. The same goes for organizing an event. We have a tight-knit team of professionals. The best feeling is looking each other in the eye and knowing: we’re creating something truly special together.”
Even though she won’t be competing, Van Tergouw still hopes for a victory – just of a different kind.
“If, on Sunday, we can say the event went smoothly and both the audience and competitors had an unforgettable experience, that will be my gold medal.”
